The Vitali Silitski Supplementary Annual Scholarship
The Vitali Silitski Supplementary Annual Scholarship was established in 2011 in memory of the late Vitali Silitski (December 25, 1972 - June 11, 2011), and his contribution to CEU and the Belarusian CEU alumni community.
Vitali is a CEU alumnus, friend and a distinguished Belarusian scholar. We believe that his memory will be a guiding example for future generations of Belarusian professionals around the world, whose CEU experience will be an important milestone in their personal and professional growth.
We are asking CEU alumni for a contribution of $10, $20, $50 or any other amount to the Vitali Silitski Supplementary Annual Scholarship. The donation can be made securely online (here or below), in cash at the CEU Alumni Relations office, or by bank transfer. Click here for more ways of transfering your gift.
About the scholarship
Belarusian students of any CEU department may apply for the scholarship during their year(s) of study. Eligible students should demonstrate academic excellence, a commitment to social activism, and financial need. Students will be asked to submit their application forms along with a CV, which will be reviewed by an appointed selection committee of Belarusian alumni, CEU Alumni office representatives and external experts.
Subject to the success of our fundraising campaign, the scholarship award will be $750 or more. Upon award of the scholarship, the selected student will be expected to complete a research project or a campus activity task designed to make a lasting impact on the university and to mark the importance of CEU's global community of alumni, students, faculty and friends from Belarus.
Vitali Silitski Scholarship Recipients:
To be awarded with Vitali Silitski Scholarship is a great honor and responsibility. It is also an opportunity to contribute to Belarusian academia as well as civic society. The research I will conduct under the scholarship will consist of comparative analysis of non-partisan election observation campaigns in various countries and their effect on the development of civic society. From this analysis I will try to single out the successful practices that could be implemented in Belarus. The outcomes of the research will be transformed into an educational course for young Belarusian electoral observers.
The Vitali Silitski Scholarship gives me the chance to broaden my worldview, as well as the scope of my research interest, and at the same time encourages me to use my research in practice. Undertaking the conditions of the scholarship I also promise to be a responsible and active member Belarusian CEU alumni community and Belarusian society in general. Thank you for this great opportunity! Aliaksandr Bystryk (NATI 2013)
Tatiana's academic interest lies in the economic policies of global markets. In her own words:
Studying at CEU is a great honor and a big challenge for me. Here I am getting priceless knowledge that I feel sure I will be able to apply in my future career. I am grateful to all donors of the [Vitali] Silitski Scholarship for their investment into my development potential. I hope to justify your expectations and I promise to become a responsible member of CEU Belarusian community. Thank you! - Tatiana Kliatskova (Belarus, ECON '13)
CEU prides itself on being an outstanding teaching and research institution, operating through the democratic principles and internationally recognized educational standards that bring up excellent scholars like Vitali every year. We believe that this scholarship can help CEU students from Belarus take their first steps into their professional and personal futures, working towards the prosperity of their country and the world.
Vitali was a brilliant Belarusian scholar who obtained his M.A. in Political Science from Central European University (CEU) in 1994 and later received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Rutgers University. From 2007 until his premature passing, he served as Director of the Belarusian Institute for Strategic Studies (BISS), which, under his leadership, became the leading think tank on Belarusian affairs.
